Woodturning - roughing out a bowl, turning green wood
In this one, I rough out a 12 inch cherry bowl so I can set it up to dry for a year or so. I cut this blank round on the bandsaw from a split log.
I had a bit of fun with this video, too.

Woodturning - How to Turn Off Center Bowl
Переглядів 113 тис.8 років тому
Full instructional video on how I turn an off-center bowl from apricot wood. I try to explain all the steps here so anyone could follow it, or modify the method to suit them. This means the video is a little longer than my usual, but I wanted this one to be a full walk-through, not just a demonstration like some others I have done. Comments definitely welcome. Here is Mike Waldt's video demonst...
Bowl with separated wenge ring

I cut the rim off a straight-sided bowl while making it, glued in a few blocks of a nice contrasting wood, and then finished shaping the bowl. I think it came out nice!
Woodturning - small platter, mounted without glue block or screws
Переглядів 50 тис.8 років тому
Sometimes a platter blank is too thin to use a woodworm screw or a faceplate with screws. A glue block works, but it's not always convenient. I show a method here that is very safe, very secure, very fast, and very effective. I probably didn't invent it, but I hope this helps someone looking for another way to mount a platter to the lathe.

Walnut gift card holder on the X-Carve CNC
Переглядів 6 тис.8 років тому
Inspired by Steve Ramsey at Woodworking for Mere Mortals, I take on the challenge of making a gift card holder from a thin board of Walnut. Instead of using the hand router like he did, I use a CNC machine to mill out a pocket for the gift card, and I also include a little engraving on the outside for Christmas. Comments welcome!

Little Round Bowl - Comeback Video
Переглядів 9 тис.9 років тому
I've been gone for a while, but I'm back! The shop is put together (mostly...), and I'm back on the lathe. I sort of just grabbed a hunk of wood and made something this time, just to pick up the tools again. Almost didn't matter what it was. But a couple of fun things happened anyway, including hollowing with the lathe in reverse. Watch to see how it goes! No idea on the wood species here. This...

It's been a while since my last video, and it may be a few weeks until my next. We're moving! That means electrical work, a new work surface or two, and figuring out how to safely move the lathe, bandsaw, etc, to the new place. Wish us luck! May the new year bring you all happiness and success. See you in a few weeks!
Woodturning a natural edge bowl

This week I turned a 6" natural edge bowl from black locust wood. The bark on this stuff is fantastic! And, to mix it up, I use a standard 1/2" bowl gouge this time instead of carbide lathe tools.

I used a few branches off a dead tree in my back yard to make some peg people, representing my family. The wood is soft, crumbly, and terrible for turning, in spite of having some interesting colors and a bit of spalting here and there. But seriously, torn out grain everywhere, and no way to really get a good surface. Now I just need to figure out how to make the dog. Simple danish oil to finis...

Yeah, in wanting to turn my first bowl I watched several videos and not one of them turned one the same way...or even attached a head the same way...Faceplate, chuck screw, live center...one guy even super glued a piece of wood to the bowl then attached the faceplate to that. And of course every one of them didn't mention a thing about making the curve inside or out, but they sure did love to talk about their super mojo-doolawa super expensive chisels when I'm here with a Central Machinery mini lathe and chisel sets I got from Amazon wondering why none of them will show me how to make a basic bowl with tools everyone can afford. Finally I stopped watching the videos, deciding the only way I'm going to learn anything is by just diving in and doing it. If something breaks then it breaks and I'll know not to do that again.

Can the carbide rougher do the job of a large traditional roughing gouge? Say you are turning a large 10" diameter log with bark on it

  • @Sam-tg4ii
    @Sam-tg4ii 8 місяців тому

I have this carbide set. It's good quality and made in US. But I still feel a bit scared using it to rough gouge something big like this, especially with bark. I keep thinking the carbide tip is going to catch, break, and fly off into my face. Not sure how grounded this fear is but I like that a traditional roughing gouge is just once piece.

I have watched several videos tonight about off-center bowls, they were all good but this method was the simplest and easiest to understand, thank you. I have an old piece of very dark walnut that was passed down to me from a father to a son then to me., and I've had it for over 20 years. I think this will do it justice.

I've been turning since I was 12 now at 70 still at and I just bought a set of carbide's just to see what all the hype was about ! Guess what I hate them anyone interested in buying a set of carbide chisels!!! I'll take the old school chisels any day and do circles around carbide turning they SUCK!!! In this video he's removed the center which first which is bad one should remove outside to the center as the walls of the bowl get week and vibrate with no center support!!!🤔 Give me a bowl gouge 5/8"and a 1/2" and half the time the bowl will be finished and hardly no sanding! Also try doing live edge with carbide! Not here to knock this video down but lean old school first and you will see were I'm coming from! Thank you to my grandfather who taught me how turn!!!👍

Don't know if you're still monitoring this site but I tried the website to place an order and it said you're shut down, email was returned as unable to deliver. Phone message said you were recovering and that number was out going only and don't leave a message, which I did at the beep anyhow. I'd like to place an order but can't seem to accomplish that . Any help would be appreciated Get well

You're basically dealing with rotting wood... I think it needs to be epoxy treated somehow at various stage of work... perhaps once the outside bowl shape is done put it in a huge vat of epoxy and suck the air out with a vacuum pot.

While yours is a good instructional video ,please, please, please get rid of that bloody annoying too loud music, I had to keep a finger on the volume button to turn it down then up again to hear you. I am sure viewers would rather hear lathe/ wood turning sounds than that awful noise. Sorry no thumb up.

I like the fact that you do this in real time. It gives a much better perspective on the actual process and progress. I'm just starting to use my new Harrison Specialties carbides. My club thinks carbides are inferior and not worth their time, so most of my learning is via UA-cam videos like yours. Thank you.
